Renovated
Pioneer Park Playground Opens To The Public

Pioneer Park, located at Pine Avenue and 4th Street, now features
the City’s newest playground equipment. Designed for younger
children, the modular unit features a log cabin theme complete with
slides, climbers, swings, and a small sand box.
The
new 3,000 sq. ft. play area replaces the old playground area that
was first constructed in the 1960’s, and renovated in the early
1980’s.
The playground opened to the public on Saturday, March 20, to an overflow
crowd of enthusiastic youngsters and their parents. The playground
also features a new rubberized surface, designed to minimize maintenance
and provide easier access for the disabled. It is the first rubberized
surface in the City park system.
The
cost of the renovation project was nearly $75,000 and was financed
through the Pennies for Playgrounds program, a grant from the California
Integrated Waste Management Board, and Community Development Block
Grant (CDBG) funds.
Cindy McCall, Parks & Urban Forestry Manager stated, “We
would like to thank the public for their $18,000 in donations through
the Pennies for Playground program that helped contribute towards
this project. The grant from the Integrated Waste Management Board
also paid for the majority of the surfacing costs.”

The Integrated Waste Management Board funds a variety of different
projects when recycled materials are utilized. The surfacing material
for the playground was created from recycled tires. Rubberized surfaces
are becoming more popular for playgrounds throughout the country.
Vincent
Elizondo, the City’s Director of Parks & Recreation added,
“This is a great addition to this neighborhood park. Our children
will enjoy this playground for many years to come. City staff took
a unique approach to secure the funding for this project without impacting
the City’s general fund.”
