The City of Lompoc Wastewater Division broke ground in April on its 27 month, $79,000,000 Plant Upgrade Project and promptly hit and broke a reclaimed water line. Not to worry - the line was quickly repaired and work continued.
The construction contractor, Parsons RCI, has been performing much demolition of existing structures which will be replaced by new treatment units. The trickling filter has not been in service for the plant in many years and once removed will make way for new dissolved air floatation thickeners used for handling the solids produced by the new treatment units. The upgraded plant will include also new grit removal and handling treatment units.

This grit handling unit will remove this harmful material from the waste stream and protect downstream processes. Parsons has installed sheet piles to allow for the excavation needed in which the grit removal unit will be fabricated. After the grit unit is constructed, the sheet piles will be removed. Next phase of construction will include excavation of some 100,000 cubic yards of material to allow for the location of the new oxidation ditches and secondary clarifiers. Stay tuned for more information and pictures as this work progresses.
