Wastewater Plant Upgrade

Posted: October 22, 2007

Update September 2007:

Many of the internal concrete walls for the two new Oxidation Ditches have been poured

and work has started on the three new secondary clarifiers. The tall Return Activate Sludge (RAS) pump cans were installed.

Micro-organisms (bugs) which have settled out of the liquid stream in the secondary clarifiers will be sent back to the Oxidation Ditches by these RAS pumps where the bugs will continue removing pollution from the wastewater. Soil stabilizing rock layers were installed at the base of the secondary clarifiers

then the center column support structure

installed and the rebar/concrete for the tank floor were installed.

Work is continuing on the new grit removal treatment unit

This treatment unit will remove from the liquid waste stream the material known as grit which can't be treated by the downstream biological treatment unit (i.e. Oxidation Ditches). This grit material will be washed and dewatered and disposed at the City's landfill. September also saw the completion of new permanent sludge lines which will transport pumped digested sludge to the sludge drying beds.

On the east side of the project site, excavation started for the new metals removal tertiary treatment unit

Metals dissolved in the wastewater will be treated with chemicals so they will fall out of solution and be removed from the liquid stream. Of course, all of this new equipment will need to be connected to power.

The electrical contractor has been running conduit in trenches and up into existing buildings.

Check back again in November to see what happened in October.
