The construction contractor will be soon able to start hooking up all the new equipment to the electrical system as the 2 new power transformers were set in place by City of Lompoc Electric staff. Some finishing touches were completed on the west electrical building, including installation of the glass window blocks.

Influent Pump Station (IPS). Since the foundation slab work was completed, rebar and forms were put in place for the first wall pours. After the wall forms were stripped, gravel was used to backfill around the outside perimeter of the vault walls. The piping from the wetwell of the existing influent pump station to the new station was installed and slurry filled in around it.

Grit Handling. After to flow leaves the influent pump station, it’ll flow to the aerated grit tanks to allow for the heavy, inorganic material (grit) to be removed. Flow leaving this treatment unit on its way to the oxidation ditches will pass through 2 automatic flow control valves. These valves were installed between the 2 pairs of (blue) isolation valves; these valves will divert flow in excess of 9.5 MGD away from the next treatment process (Oxidation Ditches) to be held then returned through the plant for treatment when the flows have decreased. The grit will be pumped to a treatment unit for washing and dewatering before being disposed at the City’s landfill. The slab and equipment pads for this equipment were installed and the actual equipment arrived by truck to be set in place in July.

Oxidation Ditches. Most of the handrails around the tanks and the light standards were installed. The final concrete work on the ditches’ effluent distribution structure was finished and the isolation valves installed. Flow through these “cut throat flumes” will be evenly divided between the in service secondary clarifiers. The new aeration blowers will be installed on new equipment pads in the new blower building. These blowers will provide air for the oxygen-breathing microorganisms who live and work in the ditches.

Secondary Clarifiers. Much of the internal equipment for the clarifiers was installed as well as the walkways which will provide staff access across the tanks to the center columns.

Secondary Effluent Equalization Pump Station (SEEPS). When there is more than 5.5 MGD passing through the plant, the additional volume will be temporarily stored in the equalization basin. When the flow falls below 5.5 MGD, the stored water will be pumped on to the next treatment unit by the SEEPS. Excavation work began on the SEEPS which included installation of the now familiar sheet piles. It’s anticipated that the bottom of this excavation will encounter ground water. Fortunately, the contractor has had practice in managing this ground water in the IPS and knows how to stabilize the subfoundation. Downstream from the SEEPS, the water will be treated with a solids-coagulant polymer. Work continued on the construction of that treatment unit’s slab and walls.

Sludge Lagoons. The installation of the liner was completed and sludge was transferred from the still-unrehabilitated sludge lagoon #1 to lagoon #2. City staff will use lagoon #2 to store digester sludge for seasonal dewatering in the biosolids drying bed. Lagoon #1 will receive the same rehab has #2 did and then placed in service as well.

Check back again in August to see what happened in July.
