What kind of technology does LompocNet wireless service use?
The LompocNet wireless system is compatible with the IEEE 802.11g industry standards (also
known as Wi-Fi). To access LompocNet, you'll need a Wi-Fi network interface device such as a
wireless Ethernet bridge, USB wireless adapter, or built-in wireless device. Many laptops are
already equipped with network cards that allow connections to Wi-Fi networks. There are dozens
of companies that build these devices. If you are trying to connect directly to our network, your
computer or other device must have an 802.11g (“Wi-Fi”) card inside of it or be connected to an
external card.
What speeds will the service provide?
Speeds will be very dependent on a couple of factors: 1) The number of simultaneous users on the
system, 2) Your location in relation to one of our access points. With that said, most users
frequently experience speeds that are approximately 1Mb bi-directional, but may fluctuate
between 256kb and 1Mb (and sometimes more) given the above dependencies. In relation to dialup
service at 50k, your minimum connection will be approximately 5 times faster, but more
commonly about 20 times faster than dial-up.
Is your signal weak or interrupted?
Reduce your wireless interference. If you have cordless phones or other wireless electronics in
your home, your computer might not be able to "hear" your router over the noise from the other
wireless devices. To quiet the noise, avoid wireless electronics that use the 2.4GHz frequency.
Instead, look for cordless phones that use the 5.8GHz or 900MHz frequencies.
How can I increase my signal strength?
LompocNet Family Plan includes use of a PepWave Personal Wi-Fi receiver (modem), which is
used to increase the signal into the home. The cost for the Family Plan is $15.99.

Consider using an outdoor antenna to improve your connection. The LompocNet Wi-Fi signal will
generally be stronger outdoors because the LompocNet Wi-Fi nodes are placed throughout
Lompoc on street lights. An outdoor antenna, with a stronger transmitter, will increase the signal
to access the LompocNet Wi-Fi network.
Outdoor antennas with line of site to LompocNet nodes can increase the signal to your home.
At this time, LompocNet service does not sell a Wi-Fi modem, however, you can purchase your
own equipment and reduce your cost for service. The Wi-Fi modem must have software designed
for an outdoor “mesh” network and we recommend at least 200mW of transmit power.
