Lompoc Citizen's Police Academy

Classroom of Lompoc Citizens' Police Academy

The Lompoc Citizens’ Police Academy is designed to give members of the community an overview of what police work is really like. The Citizens’ Academy is a scaled down version of the police training academy tailored to the philosophy of community policing espoused by members of the Lompoc Police Department. Participants will receive classroom training on a variety of topics ranging from crime prevention to homicide investigation. Participants will receive hands-on exposure to crime scene investigation and firearms training. Instructors will demonstrate Special Enforcement Team (SWAT) tactics as well as police canine training. Each member of the Citizens’ Academy class will be invited to ride-along with a police officer during the course of the academy. The academy will conclude with a graduation ceremony at which each student completing the course will be awarded a diploma by the Chief of Police.

The purpose of the Lompoc Citizens’ Police Academy is to provide responsible citizens with a deeper understanding of how the Lompoc Police Department operates and convey the Department’s mission of community service. The staff of the Lompoc Police Department believes that the success of crime prevention and detection lies in a strong partnership with members of the community they have sworn to serve. More can be accomplished to improve our community when citizens and public servants work together. Therefore, the Lompoc Citizens’ Police Academy is designed to strengthen the relationship between the citizenry and their police.

Instructors in the Citizens’ Academy will be members of the Lompoc Police Department. It is our wish that participants develop a sense of ownership in the Lompoc Police Department as they receive instruction and cultivate new friendships with officers they come into contact with.

The Lompoc Citizens’ Police Academy is a 13 week course meeting one night per week for three hours. The classes will be held at the Lompoc Police Department, Allan Hancock College Law Enforcement Academy and an off-site firearms range facility. The Academy class size will be limited to 25 participants. Applicants will be screened and notified of the next class offering when the enrollment target is attained.
