K-9 Program
The Lompoc Police Department's K-9 program began in 1989. The purpose of the K-9 program is to provide added protection for officers and citizens when potentially dangerous criminals are confronted. The Lompoc Police Department's K-9 program also provides narcotic detection capabilities.
Officer Willie Francis is the current K-9 handler. Officer Francis patrols the streets of Lompoc with his German Sheperd partner named "Xito." Xito is the only canine officer assigned to the Department at this time and has ancillary duties on the Special Enforcement Team. Xito is cross trained in narcotics detection and apprehension tactics.
Generous contributions by many local citizens and groups made the purchase of "Xito" possible - another excellent example of the community/police partnership that provides for a safer city in which to live.
