Walsh will stay on as chief for several months to ease transition

LOMPOC, CA, Jan. 9, 2019 – Lompoc Police Chief Pat Walsh this week issued his resignation from the police department, but plans to continue in his role as the chief for several months.

Plans are underway to address the impending police chief vacancy, and Walsh will be working alongside City Manager Jim Throop to ensure a smooth transition.

Walsh, who has served as the Lompoc police chief since September 2014, said he is fortunate to end his law enforcement career in Lompoc.

“I have enjoyed my 35 years of law enforcement, and would not change a thing. It is time for the fine men and women of the Lompoc Police Department to take the lead and carry on. I can think of no better people to guide the Lompoc Police Department into the future,” Walsh said. “Lompoc is a special community full of people who genuinely care about this city, and it has been my honor to call Lompoc residents my friends and neighbors”.

Throop said that Walsh will be missed in Lompoc.

“Chief Pat Walsh has done an outstanding job leading the Lompoc Police Department,” Throop said. “He exemplifies community policing at its finest, and can always be found out in the neighborhoods, getting to know those his department serves and protects. Chief Walsh is well-loved in Lompoc, and his departure will leave a hole in the heart of the Lompoc Valley. We are grateful for Chief Walsh’s time with our city.”

Walsh started his career in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 1984.  In 1991, he moved to the Northwest and began working for the Portland Police Bureau.

Walsh has an associate degree from Concordia University in management communications and leadership, and a master’s degree in homeland security from the Naval Postgraduate School, Center for Homeland Defense and Security. Walsh has been married to his high school sweetheart for 33 years, and has two adult children.
