The city is adjacent to Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB), one of the nation’s premier launch facilities. VAFB provides Lompoc with just over 6,700 jobs, being one of Lompoc’s largest employers. Situated right in the heart of the Central Coast, on Lompoc’s coastline, is headquarters for the 30th Space Wing, Vandenberg Air Force Base.

wine bottlingLocated adjacent to the Santa Rita Hills, Lompoc’s wine industry is growing and becoming a top destination for vintners and tourists to experience wine country. Over the past few years, the number of tasting rooms in Lompoc has expanded and the Wine Ghetto has become a premier location for wine production for wineries all over the country, many feature the Sta. Rita Hills Wine Appellation. Lompoc is a hub for urban tastings, vineyard tours and tastings, and a gateway to the Sta. Rita Hills vineyards, commonly recognized by their renowned Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The majority of Lompoc’s tasting rooms are located in Lompoc’s Wine Ghetto, which is situated in a lively industrial park in proximity to Old Town, restaurants, and hotels. The City of Lompoc is currently undergoing a Zoning Ordinance update to allow areas within the industrial zones of the Wine Ghetto to allow food service. Not only does Lompoc offer a unique tasting room experience featuring top wines in California, there are multiple tours that are offered which take citizens and tourists along the Wine Trail to experience one of the largest concentrations of small producing tasting rooms within Santa Barbara County.

Higher education in Lompoc is available through several opportunities. The main local institution in Lompoc is Allan Hancock Community College, which has locations in both Lompoc and on Vandenberg Air Force Base. It is ranked one of the five best community colleges in California and in the top 120 nation-wide.

allan hancock college signIt offers over 100 areas of study, certificate and associate degree programs, and opportunities to transfer to a four year university. Many Hancock students have tremendous success in transferring to University of California and California State University Campuses including the University of California, Santa Barbara and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Lompoc is also conveniently located within an hour drive to major universities, University of California, Santa Barbara and Cal Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo. Another popular higher education institution is The University of La Verne with a satellite campus on Vandenberg Air Force Base.

In addition, the college recently expanded in 2013 to include the Allan Hancock College Public Safety Training Complex, a $38 million dollar expansion that focuses on programs for fire, law enforcement, and EMS training. The state-of-the-art facility features:

  • Training for Fire, Police and Law Enforcement, EMS, Environmental Technology, Oil and Gas Safety training, Wild-land Fire, and Environmental Health.

  • 1.3 mile, 110- mph closed loop driving track, 100- yd pistol and rifle range, simulators, scenario buildings, obstacle course, mock jail, six-story training tower, 1,350 foot burn building, simulation labs, and more.

The Lompoc Unified School District (LUSD) is the driving force of preparing Lompoc’s youth to succeed and continue on to receive higher education. The two high schools that Lompoc Valley offers are Lompoc High School and Cabrillo High School. Lompoc High School features a comprehensive Business Academy that helps students obtain marketable business related skills, partake in networking, and introduce them to computer programming. Cabrillo High School recently built a new complex for the schools’ sports medicine program, as well as home to the Cabrillo High School Aquarium, which offers students an outlet for hands on experience in global marine awareness. Lompoc’s healthcare district was formed in 1956, and has since grown. Healthcare in Lompoc has become one of the major industries in town, offering employment for a large number of residents. Lompoc’s healthcare district is a community based healthcare organization that includes inpatient, outpatient and long-term healthcare services. Facilities in the district include:

  • Lompoc Valley Medical Center, built it's new facility in 2011, features state-of-the-art emergency, critical- care, surgical, cardiopulmonary and laboratory services, diagnostic imaging, general acute care, a birthing center, and perioperative, pharmacy and physical rehabilitation care.

  • A Comprehensive Care Center offers a variety of rehabilitation and nursing services since 1975. The CCC is comprised of physicians, nurses, and support staff to provide physical, social and emotional assistance to residents.

  • An Imaging Center, Professional X-Ray, offers an alternative location for all types of imaging and professional x-ray needs.

  • Psychiatry Service is provided by Lompoc Valley Medical Center and offers service to treat an array of emotional and mental disorders, as well as addiction.

  • Hematology-Oncology Service is a separate office specializing in Oncology and Hematology and creates individualized treatment programs for patients.

  • Outpatient Surgical Service, a component of the surgeon’s practice where surgeons are able to provide pre-and post-operative consultative visits.

  • Sleep Disorder Center, a privately owned company that works with healthcare in Lompoc to administer sleep studies in comfortable and welcoming rooms for patients that stray away from the feel of a sleep laboratory.

  • Coastal Radiation Oncology Medical Group opened the doors to the Lompoc Radiation Oncology Center in 2016. The state-of-the-art facility includes low- and high-energy machines to treat both skin cancers as well as deeper cancers.

Lompoc is also home to a multitude of additional healthcare providers to offer residents a variety of options. Providers include Community Health Centers and Lompoc Health Care Center, along with many others. Community Health Centers has broken ground on their new 28,000-square-foot facility on the 1200 block of West Ocean. The $15.4 million project will accommodate 50 medical and dental exam rooms. The City of Lompoc is a full-service City, responsible for all major city general fund supported services such as police, fire, library, parks and recreation, and planning.

  • The Police Department includes a complete jail facility as well as a Victim Advocate and Citizen's Police Academy.

  • The Fire Department of Lompoc has two separate stations, three fire engines, a ladder truck, a brush truck, and a disaster response trailer.

  • The Electric Utility provides affordable power through the Northern California Power Agency and has been in operation since 1920.

  • The Water Utility has eleven wells and four tanks. The city ensures superior water quality through the use of a stateoftheart water plant.

  • The Wastewater Utility, operates from a $110 million regional Wastewater Plant. The plant is permitted to operate at five million gallons per day, and currently operates at 2.8 MGD. At the moment, 2.8 MGD in treated water flows to the river, thus enabling that water for reuse.

  • The Lompoc Civic Auditorium offers a venue for a wide range of community programs and theatre purposes.

  • A Municipal Airport that supports the commercial and recreational use of prop and business jets.

  • A Public Library with programs for all ages.

  • The Solid Waste Collection Service and Solid Waste Landfill Service include the recycle of green waste. These services are located within City limits and include a household and commercial hazardous waste collection center.

  • The Wireless Internet Utility provides service to city businesses and residents. Building and Planning Services offer a business friendly approach.

  • The Lompoc Aquatic Center is utilized for recreational, competitive, therapy and activity use. The Center is used primarily by High School Swim and Water Polo Teams, and is home to tournaments, swim meets and lessons.

  • The Anderson Recreation Center offers a wide range of youth and adult programs, as well as event venue rental. The facility was recently updated with brand new flooring, paint, and updated basketball and volleyball court facility including rennovated wood flooring.

  • The Dick DeWees Community and Senior Center includes a banquet room, multipurpose room, kitchens, meeting rooms, classrooms, and office space.

  • Over 600 acres of parks, recreation fields, picnic areas, trails, and open space areas, including a campground with 35 spaces featuring recreational vehicle plug ins.
