As of July 1, 2011, the Carbon Monoxide (CO) Poisoning Prevention Act (Senate Bill- SB 183) requires all single-family homes with an attached garage or a fossil fuel source to install carbon monoxide alarms within the home. Owners of multi-family leased or rental dwellings, such as apartment buildings, are required to comply with the law by January 1, 2013.
Where Should These Devices be Located?
- Outside sleeping areas, including the basement
- On every occupiable level of the unit, including basements
- Smoke alarms need to also be in every sleeping room
- Manufacturer's installation instructions should also be followed
