PURPOSE

The primary goal of weed abatement is to minimize the risk of wildfires, which can be significantly heightened by overgrown or unmanaged vegetation, especially during the dry summer months. In addition to fire prevention, the ordinance also addresses concerns such as rodent and pest infestations, obstructed public rights-of-way, and diminished neighborhood appearance. The code authorizes city officials to issue notices of violation and, if necessary, take corrective action on behalf of non-compliant property owners—with all costs and administrative fees charged back to the party responsible.

CITY ORDINANCE

Weed abatement, as defined by the Lompoc Municipal Code, is a critical public safety and environmental protection measure designed to reduce fire hazards, protect public health, and maintain community aesthetics. Under LMC Chapter 17.628, property owners within the City of Lompoc are required to manage and remove combustible vegetation—including weeds, grass, dead trees, and other flammable debris—from their property to prevent the rapid spread of fire and reduce associated risks to life and property. The purpose of weed abatement is not only to safeguard individual parcels but also to protect surrounding neighborhoods, public infrastructure, and open spaces.

PROCEDURE

The City of Lompoc conducts annual inspections and outreach, typically beginning in the spring, to ensure timely compliance. Property owners are expected to clear weeds and maintain defensible space regularly, not just once per year. Enforcement of weed abatement regulations is considered essential to community resilience, especially in wildland-urban interface zones where natural vegetation meets developed areas. By adhering to weed abatement requirements, residents contribute to a safer, cleaner, and more livable Lompoc.

If you need help determining whether weed abatement is required on your property, please contact the Lompoc Fire Department at (805) 875-8050. Staff are available to provide guidance and answer any questions regarding compliance with local regulations.
