Traffic Unit

The Lompoc Police Department’s Traffic Unit operates within the Field Operations Division. Our approach to traffic safety is built on the “Three E’s”: Enforcement, Engineering, and Education. The primary mission of the Traffic Unit is to reduce injury and fatal collisions through these three principles.

The unit is staffed by two personnel: one Traffic Sergeant and one Motorcycle Officer. Their core responsibilities include conducting follow‑up investigations on hit‑and‑run collisions, investigating non‑injury through major injury or fatal traffic collisions, addressing traffic‑related complaints and calls for service, and submitting complaints for traffic‑related crimes. The department currently utilizes a Harley‑Davidson motorcycle for traffic enforcement operations.

While we receive requests for traffic enforcement in all areas of the city—and we do respond—our limited staffing requires us to focus on locations where enforcement will have the greatest impact. By deploying our Traffic Officers strategically, we aim to make the most meaningful reduction in collisions throughout the community.

Grant Funding for Specialized Enforcement/DUI and Drivers License Checkpoints

The Lompoc Police Department receives funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety to increase enforcement of seatbelt laws and driving‑under‑the‑influence violations. These funds come from grants that the department applies for and is awarded. The State distributes “pass‑through” funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a federal agency, specifically to support traffic‑safety operations. This funding is restricted and may only be used for traffic enforcement. It cannot be used for additional patrol staffing, investigations, equipment, or any other law enforcement activity unrelated to traffic enforcement.

The Lompoc Police Department does not have quotas, nor do any of the grants we receive. Grant requirements focus solely on increasing enforcement efforts using the federal funds provided. Additionally, fines collected from traffic citations do not significantly increase the City’s budget. We do not issue citations to generate revenue.

Traffic Collision Tips

In the State of California, a police report is only required when a collision results in injury or death. If you choose to file a police report, be aware that the information is forwarded to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The collision will appear on each driver’s DMV record, regardless of fault, and may affect insurance premiums. If an officer completes a report and is able to determine fault, the at‑fault driver may receive a traffic citation for the violation that caused the collision. Citations may be issued at the scene or mailed after the investigation is completed.

Whether or not a police report is taken, drivers are required by law to exchange the following information after a collision:

  • Full name

  • Address

  • Residence and business phone numbers

  • Driver’s license number and state of issue

  • Insurance company and policy number

  • Vehicle make, model, and license plate number

  • Names and phone numbers of passengers or witnesses

THE LOMPOC POLICE DEPARTMENT REMINDS BOTH DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS TO REMAIN ALERT AND SHARE THE ROAD WITH ONE ANOTHER

The Lompoc Police Department is sharing an important reminder for both drivers and pedestrians. The message is simple: whether you’re behind the wheel or on foot, we all share the responsibility of watching out for one another. A pedestrian is never a match for a vehicle.

We encourage everyone to slow down, stay alert, and take a moment to be mindful of others on the road. A little extra awareness can help ensure that everyone gets where they’re going safely.

Tips for Drivers

  • Obey all posted speed limits.

  • Avoid distractions. Keep your eyes on the road, not your phone.

  • Before and while backing up, check carefully for pedestrians who may be behind your vehicle.

  • Before making a turn, ensure the crosswalk is clear. If a pedestrian has the right of way, allow them to cross safely before proceeding.

Tips for Pedestrians

  • Use crosswalks or intersections, preferably those with stop signs or signals.

  • Look left‑right‑left before entering a crosswalk. A green light or “WALK” signal does not guarantee that drivers see you. Stay aware of your surroundings.

  • Avoid using earbuds or looking at your phone while walking.

  • Try to make eye contact with approaching drivers.

  • Walk facing traffic whenever possible.

  • Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective material at night.
