America Recycles Day 2018
America Recycles Day is on November 15th, 2018. America Recycles Day is a world-wide event dedicated to promoting and educating recycling in our cities, towns, schools, and daily lives. Visit the America Recycles website and take the #BERECYCLED pledge to take action and help increase recycling in your community. You can also click below to learn more about household recycling and how YOU can make a difference this year.
Plastic Bags Go in the Trash
Due to significant changes in the recycling market, plastic bags are no longer accepted in the blue-top recycling bins. Plastic bags are no longer recyclable, and must now be disposed of in the regular trash. Instead of using plastic bags, bring your own re-usable bags or ask for a paper bag when shopping at your local store.
Free Mattress Recycling for Lompoc Residents
The Lompoc Landfill (S. Avalon St.) now offers free mattress recycling. Residents can bring their old mattresses (any size) to the landfill and drop it off to be recycled at no charge. Mattresses contain valuable wood, metal and fibers that can be reused in many different products.
Mandatory Recycling at Businesses and Apartments
California State Law now requires mandatory recycling at all commercial businesses and multi-family complexes, including apartments, condos, townhouses, and mobile home parks. The City of Lompoc has three recycling program options to choose from: Commingled Recycling, Green Waste Recycling, and Cardboard Recycling. Contact the Solid Waste Office at (805) 875-8024 to get more information and to start your recycling services.
Single-family residences and business customers are offered a 3-container system: Trash, Commingled Recycling and Green Waste Recycling. Your refuse bill is solely based on the level of your trash service - size of container and frequency of collection. Recycling and Green Waste services are offered at no additional charge. Single family residences are collected once/week, and commercial customers can be collected up to five days/week (Monday - Friday) if required.

Starting Your Service
To start service, you must first set-up a Utilities Account at City Hall with the Utility Billing Department. City Hall is located at 100 Civic Center Plaza. For information about starting your account, please call (805) 875-8258.
After your account is established, please call the Solid Waste Division at (805) 875-8024 to order your container(s) or to change your service level. Single family residents have the following container options:
Trash: 65 or 95 gal
Commingled Recycling: 95 gal (no additional charge)
Green Waste: 95 gal (no additional charge)
All containers must be put out on time in order to be serviced. Commercial collection begins at 6 a.m Monday-Friday. Residential collection begins at 7 a.m Monday-Friday. Failure to put your containers out on time will result in an "extra service fee" on your monthly bill.
In order to protect landfill capacity, conserve natural resources, save energy and comply with the State's waste diversion/recycling mandates, residents and businesses have a variety of opportunities to recycle. Please click on the links below for more information:

The City of Lompoc closely monitors all Commingled Recycling and Green Waste containers. Commingled Recycling containers are for commingled recyclable materials (plastic, glass, paper etc.) only. Green Waste containers are for yard waste and plant scraps only. Any Commingled Recycling or Green Waste containers found to be contaminated with trash or other materials will be tagged by the collections staff and the homeowner will be notified. If a container is tagged 3 times it will be removed from the residence and will not be returned. For more information on how to avoid contaminating your containers, please see the links above or call the Solid Waste Office at (805) 875-8024.
Residents and businesses can self-haul their trash and recyclable materials to the Lompoc Landfill. The Landfill accepts the following materials for recycling: cardboard, green waste, wood waste, appliances (i.e., washers/dryers, refrigerators, etc.), electronic waste, tires, concrete, top soil, scrap metal, motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze and batteries. The Landfill is open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The Landfill is located at the South terminus of Avalon Street, just off of Olive Avenue. Please see the link below for the Landfill's holiday schedule and disposal rates.
Materials such as paint, flammable liquids, pesticides, cleaners, automotive fluids, electronic waste, fluorescent lights, and batteries are considered hazardous waste and must be not be thrown in the normal trash. To assist residents and small businesses in properly managing their hazardous wastes, the Solid Waste Division manages a number of programs and facilities where hazardous wastes can be dropped-off for proper disposal or recycling. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility (1585 N. V St) is open to the public by appointment only, Tuesday - Friday from 10 am - 1 pm, and Saturday from 8 am - 8:15 am. Please call the Solid Waste Office at (805) 875-8024 to make an appointment.

Used Oil and Oil Filter Collection Centers
Disposing of your used motor oil in the trash, down the gutter or storm drain, or on the ground can harm the environment and public health. To promote the proper recycling of used motor oil and filters, the City provides residents with a number of convenient Collection Centers. You can also drop by the Solid Waste Office at 1300 W. Laurel to pick up a free 15-quart drain pan, an oil filter container (holds two filters), and a funnel. For Collection Center locations, please click on the link below:
To report graffiti call (805) 875-ASAP (2727). Our goal is to remove graffiti within 48 hours of notification by means of the City's volunteer removal team.
Residents have a variety of opportunities to have their large, bulky items (i.e., mattresses, washers/dryers, couches, etc.) picked-up. Call the Solid Waste Office at (805) 875-8024 to schedule a bulky item pickup or a special haul. All items must be placed either on the curb or in the alley. We cannot remove items from your home, front lawn, or driveway. We highly recommend calling ASAP to reserve your pick-up as appointments fill up quickly. Please do not put your items out until your scheduled pick-up time. Items must be put out by 7 am in order to be picked-up.
- Bulky Item Pick-up - Lompoc residents may schedule up to three bulky item collections per year at no additional charge. We allow a maximum of two items per pick-up. Please let us know what items will be out for pick-up before your scheduled pick-up date. If you want to change items or cancel your pick-up, please call the Solid Waste Office ASAP before your pick-up date. Failure to do so will result in items being left behind and/or forfeiture of one of your three bulky item pick-ups.
- Special Hauls - We offer special hauls to businesses who need large items hauled away, or to residents who need more than two large items removed at a time. Special hauls are only scheduled for Wednesday's. Please call at least one week in advance and provide a detailed list of the items that will be out for pick-up. We will not pick up any items that are not on the list. The rate is $30 per 15 minutes of loading time (not prorated). The special haul fee is added to your monthly trash bill.
In order to remove leaves, dirt and other debris from City streets, the Solid Waste Division provides monthly street sweeping. The Division is currently testing a new schedule where sweeping will occur the day following garbage collection. This will allow the City to remove more litter and debris from City streets. If you are unsure of the current schedule please call (805) 875-8024. After testing and finalizing the new routes, an updated map/schedule will be available on our website. Thank you for your patience.
Backyard Composting allows you to convert your vegetable food waste and yard clippings into a high quality soil amendment for your lawn, garden and landscaping. The City offers Backyard Composting Kits for $22. Pick up your kit from the Solid Waste Office at 1300 W. Laurel or call (805) 875-8024 for more information.
To promote the City's various disposal and recycling programs, the Solid Waste Division mails Trash Talk in May and December of each year to Lompoc residents and businesses. In addition, Staff provides presentations at the Environmental Awareness Fair, contracts with Art From Scrap to conduct classroom workshops on waste reduction/recycling and composting, and provides classroom presentations and Landfill tours.
